Atmosphere Sky vs. HEPA Filters: What 0.0024 Microns Actually Means
You have probably seen HEPA filters marketed as the gold standard of air purification. And in many ways they are excellent. But when you look at the Atmosphere Sky, you will notice the specs go significantly beyond what HEPA certification requires. Here is what that actually means in practice.
What HEPA actually requires
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. A true HEPA filter is certified to capture at least 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. That specification is based on the particle size that is hardest to capture — 0.3 microns is where filtration efficiency dips the most, so it became the standard test point.
At that level, HEPA filters are very effective at capturing dust, pollen, most pet dander, and larger mold spores. For many households, that covers most of what matters.
What the Atmosphere Sky does differently
The Atmosphere Sky achieves a Single Pass Efficiency of 99.99% for particles as small as 0.0024 microns. To put that in perspective, 0.3 microns is roughly the size of a large bacterium. At 0.0024 microns, the Atmosphere Sky is capturing particles over 100 times smaller — entering the territory of fine viruses, ultra-fine combustion particles, and some of the smallest airborne chemical compounds.
This is made possible by the Inteliflow system, which combines a washable pre-filter, a replaceable HEPA-grade filter, and a replaceable carbon filter, all working together in a unique airflow design that maximizes the contact each particle has with the filtration media.
Beyond particles: odor and chemical reduction
Standard HEPA filters capture particles. They do not address gases, odors, or volatile organic compounds. The Atmosphere Sky is the only air purifier among its competitors certified to reduce odors from cooking, pets, formaldehyde, mildew, and chemicals like ozone. The carbon filter stage handles what the particle filter cannot.
What this means for your home
For most households, a standard HEPA purifier will handle dust and pollen effectively. Where the Atmosphere Sky makes a more significant difference is in homes with pets, smokers, cooking odors, chemical sensitivities, asthma, or very young children — situations where the full spectrum of air quality matters, not just particle size.
